Driving Change: Empowering UN Resident Coordinators Against Plastic Pollution
In a pivotal briefing session by UNEP and the Development Coordination Office (DCO), UN Resident Coordinators (RCs) in Asia-Pacific united to combat plastic pollution. The session, held during the Annual RCs retreat highlighted policy frameworks, project development, finance mobilization, and capacity building, aimed to bolster UN interventions. Together, we are shaping a sustainable future.

Bridging Rights and Responsibility: Revolutionizing EPR in Southeast Asia
With nearly 40% of the global informal sector engaged in waste management, integrating them into Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes is paramount. In recognizing the vital role of informal waste management, especially waste pickers, we are reshaping plastic pollution management to safeguard labour rights, health equity, and the environment. Partnering with WWF Germany and a range of stakeholders, this regional study aims to empower communities and drive sustainable change. Stay tuned for its launch and regional capacity building to be held during the SEA of Solutions 2024!

In addition, SEA circular, in collaboration with Vietnam National University (VNU), spearheaded the integration of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for managing marine plastic litter in Vietnam. Focused on enhancing women's roles in waste collection and aligning with Vietnam's National Action Plan on Plastic Waste Management, this initiative has bolstered capacity and supports its policy goals.
