SIGN UP: GLOBAL PREMIERE OF SHORT FILM “PLASTIK”

About the Event: In conjunction with the world environment day 2022, the SEA circular project jointly with MeshMinds and Studio Birthplace organizing an event to introduce the short film – PLASTIK, which is developed by MeshMinds and produced by Studio Birthplace.
We are cordially inviting audiences to view the plastic pollution crisis through the eyes and imagination of a child in South-East Asia, a major hotspot for plastic pollution. It is the first short film made in Asia for an Asian audience, using creative storytelling and live action drama to raise awareness and catalyse action to end plastic pollution in the region. The film follows a child experiencing hyper-realistic glimpses into a plastic-polluted future through the lens of a plastic bottle ‘telescope’.

Objective of the event: The event is designed to premiere the film globally on Facebook, and will hold a panel discussion, in conjunction with the premiere of the film and leading up to World Environment Day 2022, aims to highlight, particularly in a South-East Asian context, the social implications of plastic pollution and how to mitigate them, and ways to ignite behavioural change in the region, to say no to single-use plastic. The panel also hopes to discuss ways in which sustainability advocates, governments and laymen can do their part to increase empathy for the crisis.
- Sean Lin – Producer, (PLASTIK) Sean is the co-founder of Studio Birthplace, where he has helped organisations work towards a sustainable future by creating awareness around their mission through emotionally engaging storytelling. In the past 4 years, Studio Birthplace projects have won over 60 awards and have been featured in over a hundred international film festivals.
- Kathlyn Tan – Co-founder, Coastal Natives Kathlyn is co-founder of Coastal Natives, a Rumah Foundation project, which aims to increase ocean awareness and inspire new ocean lovers and conservationists. She serves as a Board Trustee of Conservation International Singapore, Board Director of The Good Food Institute Singapore, member of the Technical Advisory Panel for Sustainable Finance Institute Asia, and member of the Leadership Council for the Regenerative Fund for Nature.
- Sydney Steenland – Founder, Sea Monkey Project Originally from Australia and presently based in Malaysia, 16-year old climate activist Sydney Steenland is championing ocean plastic solutions and education. Founder of The Sea Monkeys Project, she and her team have breathed new life into plastic waste by up-cycling them into ethical souvenirs. Beyond up-cycling projects, she strongly emphasises the importance of education, running workshops, providing free resources, and conducting educational talks to raise awareness about the global plastic crisis.
- Cher Chua Lassalvy – Founder, Tengah Island Conservation After spending 10 years in the financial services industry in London, Cher moved back home to Malaysia, where she set up Tengah Island Conservation, a non-profit biodiversity management NGO, and Batu Batu Island Project, a sustainable island retreat. Cher strongly believes in using tourism as a force for good, and has spearheaded tourism-for-communities projects that help local communities.
- Kay Vasey – Executive Producer, (PLASTIK) and Moderator Kay is the founder of The MeshMinds Foundation, a registered not-for-profit arts organisation that empowers artists in the Asia-Pacific region to focus on the most pressing social, environmental and educational challenges of our time. The MeshMinds Foundation is supported by its sister organisation, MeshMinds, a creative technology studio partnered with the United Nations Environment Programme.
- Isabelle Louis – Deputy Regional Director, United Nations Environment ProgrammeIsabelle Louis, Deputy Regional Director of UNEP Asia Pacific office, has over 25 years of experience in sustainable development and natural resource management at global, Asia Pacific regional and national levels. She coordinates the UNEP’s work programme in the region pursuant to the organization’s mandate to support UN Member States on issues related to the environment, sustainability and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
