High level dialogue on plastic pollution – Next steps to end plastic pollution
Event Date: 23 May 2022 at 13:30-14:30 (Bangkok time)
Event Location: Hybrid
About the Event: Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing issues of today especially in the Asia and Pacific region. As one of global visions, the ESCAP has committed to reducing additional pollution by marine plastic litter to zero by 2050. Given the growing momentum to address this issue, a resolution “End plastic pollution: Towards an international legally binding instrument” was adopted at UNEA 5.2, which establishes intergovernmental negotiating committee. At this juncture, the side event presents an opportunity to focus on the internationally legal binding instrument on plastic pollution including in the marine environment, and explores next steps for achieving the abovementioned commitment.
Expected Outcome: This side event explores necessary elements to be included in an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, through discussions involving a wide range of participants. It helps audiences, especially government officials, academia, NGOs, and private sectors from the Asia Pacific to deepen their understanding on how the future discussions towards ending plastic pollution at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee could unfold.
